Halloween Safety – How to Stay Safe This Halloween

There is no doubt that Halloween is a very fun time of the year. But that fun can end in tragedy if you or your children are not careful. Be sure to always follow the safety tips below to keep everyone safe and sound.

SELECT SAFE COSTUMES – This may not have occurred to you before, but it is a good idea to choose outfits that are made from vibrant colors. That way, your child can be more easily seen in the dark.

One more thing to bring to mind is the length of the costume. It is a disgrace that a number of individuals do not comprehend how hazardous it can be to put candles along the length of sidewalks precisely where boys and girls (as well as men and women) may inadvertently catch on fire. Having a shorter costume will help for preventing fires. Moreover, it may help prevent your child from stumbling over an outfit that’s too long.

FLASHLIGHTS & GLOW STICKS – Without doubt you’re fully aware of the need for ensuring your son or daughter can be seen at nighttime. The reason this is important is because children have a tendency to run out into the road without looking first. Having either a flashlight or a glow stick will make sure drivers see your youngster if this happens.

There are many fun character flashlights for sale during Halloween that you can choose from. Or, you can simply bring a basic flashlight from home.

If you decide to go with a glow stick, then your choices are almost as varied as they are for flashlights. You can get sticks that hang from ropes that can be worn around the neck, or sticks that can be connected and made into bracelets or necklaces and worn that way. There are also sticks are are simply held, but these can be dropped, so choose something that can be worn.

AVOID DARK HOUSES – It is a good idea to educate your children to avoid homes that are dark. You never know if the residents do not have any more candy, are not at home, or are just being anti-social. It is best to skip any houses that are dark and uninviting.

STAY IN GROUPS – Children (and teenagers) should never go trick-or-treating alone. Make sure your children go out in groups of at least three kids. There is safety in numbers, so the more kids, the safer they will be.

DRIVING SAFETY – If you find yourself driving during the time when children are trick-or-treating, be sure to use extreme caution. Not all children will be wearing brightly colored costumes, or have flashlights or glow sticks. In fact, some kids may be dressed in black, with no lighting at all.

Therefore, it is critical that you drive slowly, and cautiously, when you are out. And remember, trick-or-treating may not be held on Halloween night. Different communities hold this event on different nights.

EXAMINE ALL TREATS – Make sure to inspect every piece of candy before you allow your kids to consume a single thing. This can be tough, because children are sorely tempted by the candies they’ve accumulated, but it is essential.

Throw away anything that appears to have a needle mark or has been ripped or previously opened. As for homemade goodies, unless you know and trust the person they came from, throw them away, too.

ENJOY TRICK-OR-TREATING – The above tips might make Halloween sound scary, but really they are just common sense. If you and your kids are careful, then the evening is sure to be fun for you all.
