Children’s formal wear is basically just miniature versions of adult clothes. Keep in mind that children run around a lot and get into many ‘sticky’ situations, so buy clothes that are appropriate for their playful behavior as well as the occasion. You might think that it’s cheaper to buy thinner materials as they will outgrow it, but having a child at a function with torn clothes is not very ideal! When you do find an outfit that combines a formal wear style with a durable fabric, you could buy a couple in one or two sizes larger so that future purchases of formal wear are minimized. Try to buy clothes that have big buttons so that your child can button and unbutton the clothes. You can find some really cute, big buttons on clothes specifically for younger children.

If your kids are not potty trained yet, make sure the clothes are easy to unbutton or remove. Also, avoid buttons that are at the neck to avoid any accidental choking. Another great idea would be to involve your child in the process of buying clothes as it will make for a great bonding time with your child and your kid will love to wear the clothes since he or she chose it. Another good tip would also be to buy one standard, good durable coat for your kid. Nowadays, there is such a variety of coats and vests with respect to designs, colors and styles that you can’t go wrong. When buying shoes, it is good to bring your child with you.

However, if for some reason this is not possible, trace your child’s foot on a piece of paper and take it with you the next time you go shopping. Remember to ask if the store accepts returns as if the shoes don’t fit properly, you can return it. Black is a good staple color to have in the wardrobe as this is very practical. When he outgrows his present pants, you can easily buy another one in black and it will still go with the rest of his clothes. Tops and ties can be in a variety of colors to offset the black. You may be tempted to hold off on buying formal wear for your children thinking that they would soon outgrow their clothes but an occasion might arise that would see you needing an outfit at the last minute.

However, because you have to buy at short notice, you may end up buying something that may not be durable or is very expensive. Having a couple of formal wear outfits for your child in the wardrobe would be good and shopping for one without the pressure last minute shopping will ensure that you get some clothes that are not only durable and appropriate but within your budget.
