I am very happy with the printer now that it’s working. However, at first I put in the set-up CD and everything connected perfectly until I tried to print something. Nothing happened. My computer showed that the printer was connected and online but still nothing happened. I called HP and got through fairly quickly to a pleasant young lady in India. For a long time she couldn’t get it to print. She even had me accept a program that allowed her to connect with my computer and control it. Finally she went into DOS and began to change programs. After about 2 hours she finally got it to print. Since then it has worked perfectly. By the way, I’m using a fairly new HP computer with Windows 7 so it should have had no problem. On the positive side the printer works very well. I’m happy with the printing scanning, faxing and copying. Ink is supposed to be cheaper for this printer and I intend to purchase ink soon. I checked prices on new HP ink for it and so far the best prices I’ve found have been from companies listed on Amazon. This machine has loads of technology for the price. I am still wary of the cost of supplies having read the prior reviews, but, have not had to order anything yet. This is a secondary printer for my business as I do limited color printing and needed a backup fax/scanner. I have not had any problems with the new machine. I had to replace the HP 6500 wireless that I owned for 18 months, due to the black ink refusing to print. HP never answered my requests to address the issue that plagues the 6500, so I had to resort to the HP community. They have great techies, but their remedies did not help. I researched many other brands, but after weighing the pros and cons I purchased the OJ 8500. The cartridges are slightly more expensive, but are supposed to print a lot more pages than the 6500′s. Easy set-up. On the advice of the tech (at Staples where I purchased this unit for $179.99, plus $50.00 discount for any old printer) I downloaded the software from HP to a flashdrive then to my computer, it has all the latest updates for fixes, etc. I also purchased a 3 yr. warranty with 100% replacement for $59.99, total cost $202.05 including tax. I liked knowing that I could take it to any local Staples, too. No packing, shipping and wondering how long before I’m up and running again. Less downtime for my business. Also, the cartridges in the 8500 are not start-up size, they are full size regular cartridges. So far, this unit appears to be what is claimed. I used to love HP printers (and what was truly a great American company!), but it seems that the recent models have had increasingly serious problems and there is virtually no way to get real responses from HP. They replace the printers but the real issue is the loss of time that it takes to deal with the issues. They pack more features in, but the basics work with less reliability with each passing model.

The latest is the 8500A Plus where scans come through with the image from the back of any 2 sided document bleeding through. HP tech support recognizes the issue but their answer is that it is an inherent problem. Customer service offers to replace it with the same unit, but that is no answer.

other problems recently with other models (8500 premier) have included a firmware problem that they know about but have not fixed that causes the printer to go into hibernation and not come out unless you unplug and replug it in. that gets frustrating and the only answer is to NOT run it with the energy saving mode turned on. SO far, no fix.

Other units have what a lot of people complain about in the paper feeding where you discover that many pages fed through together. That was not a problem with the very reliable prior models.

It’s sad to see a brand take a nose dive and have a corporate culture where you cannot even reach an HP executive to tell them the issues. They have a sophisticated call avoidance system where you can never get through to anyone who should be interested in hearing important customer experiences. They just don’t seem to care. They won’t until the problems get well enough known that customers choose to buy their next printers without the HP brand.

Between this and Dell’s laptop overheating issues, I guess that technology is just getting more and more challenging.
